CAMPBELL SALGADO STUDIO UNVEILS OUTDOOR PORTRAIT GARDEN AND PUBLIC SCULPTURE ‘JUMP’
Local artists invite neighbors to celebrate with a Summer Party Aug. 7, 10AM to 5PM

PORTLAND, OR – July 22, 2010

This year Sellwood’s Summer Passport event on Aug. 7th, marks the unveiling of local photographers, Campbell Salgado Studio’s, new outdoor portrait garden and public sculpture installation. Neighbors are invited to step through their garden gate into a natural light photo studio behind their lovingly-restored 1908 Craftsman. Welcoming drivers, bicyclists and neighborhood walkers on Tacoma Street is a newly-placed, large-scale, painted steel sculpture entitled ‘Jump’ that evokes happy energy. On Saturday, August 7th between the hours of 10 am – 5pm families can sip ice-cold, lavender lemonade and kids of all ages can enjoy an Ispy scavenger hunt and participate in an old fashioned cupcake walk while experiencing a one-of-a-kind portrait garden filled with sculpture and artistic finishes.

A beautifully-updated, portrait garden boasts a 10’ water wall created from copper which is a central feature in the garden designed and built by sculptor, Francisco Salgado. Stunning features are found throughout the garden including hand-painted washes on the unique backgrounds, embossed copper panels and antique doors and windows. In keeping with their eco-friendly ethos, Campbell and Salgado enjoy salvaging architectural treasures and found objects from a variety of places. A hand-crafted, smoky-red, stucco wall is inset with a custom-made, rustic door crafted from re-purposed timber found under their front porch during a remodel.

A huge dogwood tree, ginkgos, bamboo and passion flower are among the lush plantings that are nourished by drip irrigation throughout all the gardens to minimize water usage. Cobblestones, acid stained concrete provide hardscaping throughout the portrait garden with a river of blue stones creating an exciting visual element of exploration through the middle of the outdoor space.

Says Photographer, Kim Campbell “we have created optimal lighting scenarios for photographing our favorite subjects – families – by building light filtering structures to provide respite and gorgeous natural lighting for portrait photography.” A new addition to their outdoor photo studio offerings is a special table top set-up that allows babies to be safely and comfortably photographed in a natural light portrait environment too.

Guests will discover why Campbell Salgado is Portland’s playful photo boutique as they spy little treasures hidden throughout the garden. From tiny birdhouses, sculptures and treasure maps to tea parties, play is encouraged when children step into the garden. Campbell Salgado even has a few surprises (valued from $79 – $200) for Passport visitors who schedule a complimentary planning session for their holiday family photos while touring the studio on August 7th.

Partnering with local family-owned businesses is one of the unique ways Campbell Salgado Studio has grown their business over the last 15 years. August 7th they are excited to share prizes and treats with their guests from the Eclectikid’s humorous t-shirts, hip treasures from toy store Plue and tasty cupcakes from RobotsLoveCupCakes Bakery.

Stepping from the backyard to the front, visitors will discover that Francisco Salgado is not only an established photographer but a talented sculptor as well. His large-scale, steel public sculpture entitled ‘Jump’ has been installed on the SW corner of SE 16th & Tacoma. This 9’ painted steel sculpture now welcomes neighbors and visitors alike with a friendly wave. ‘Jump’ might be recognized from its previous home in Lake Oswego where it was displayed for two consecutive years as part of the 2009 Gallery Without Walls exhibition. Salgado is widely recognized both locally and internationally for his bronze, ceramic, stone, metal, and wood sculptures and is a past winner of the prestigious Jan Zach award for sculpture.
